What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening metric that relates your weight to your height. It's calculated as weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of your height (in meters). BMI is widely used because it's cheap to measure and correlates — on average — with body-fat percentage in adults.
BMI Categories (Adults)
- Underweight: less than 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: 25 – 29.9
- Obese: 30 and above
Limitations
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular people can appear "overweight" despite low body fat. It can also be misleading for pregnant women, older adults with reduced muscle mass, and some ethnic groups for whom health risks appear at different BMI thresholds. For a full picture, consult a healthcare professional and consider additional measurements like waist circumference.
