Tip Calculator
Calculate tip and split the bill.
Fair, Fast Tip Splitting
Whether you're grabbing a quick coffee or splitting a dinner bill with eight friends, this calculator does the arithmetic for you. Pick a preset tip percentage or enter a custom one, then set the number of people to see the per-person total.
How Much Should You Tip?
- United States: 15–20% is standard at restaurants; 20%+ for exceptional service.
- Canada: 15–18% is common.
- United Kingdom: 10–12.5%, often already added as a "service charge."
- Most of Europe: 5–10% is generous; service is often included.
- Japan: Tipping is generally not expected and can even be considered rude.
Tipping on Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax
Technically, the tip should be calculated on the pre-tax subtotal — you're tipping on the value of the service, not on the government's take. In practice, many people just tip on the final total, which is a little more generous. This calculator assumes you're entering the amount you want to base the tip on; enter the subtotal if you want strict pre-tax tipping.
Splitting Tips Fairly
The fairest way to split is to add the tip to the total and divide. That's what this tool does. If some people ordered appetizers or drinks that others didn't, consider handling those items separately and splitting only the shared portion.
